Most Common Reasons People Are Fired
Getting fired is something that you want to avoid at all costs during your career. Not only is it psychologically defeating, it can be a cause of big concern to a future employer.
In all, there is nothing positive about being fired from your job. Rather than be fired, we should always look to be either down-sized or leave on our own will.
While employees may always have disagreeing views with their employer, the smart ones deal with these views in a manner that is conducive to them staying at their job.
Getting in a fight with the boss. Successful people point things out to their boss and are careful that they never make their boss look bad in front of other employees by fighting with them and engaging in long, counterproductive arguments that only they can lose.
Fighting with a superior provides the employee with no gain and maximum downside. The smart employees learn to avoid or deal with a difficult boss while the ones who act differently inevitably get fired.
Stealing or giving out competitive information. You should never steal and you should never give out competitive information (a form of corporate theft).
This will get anyone fired regardless of how good they are or how justified they may feel the actions were. Just because you're pissed off, does not mean you should act upon that rage by doing something that is going to make you lose integrity which is worse than losing your job…except in this situation, you kill two birds with one stone.
Speaking badly about the company. There are always negative people within a company and they spend hours upon hours picking out the negatives about their employer and soon find themselves always speaking badly about the company to anybody they meet.
That is, until they meet someone who wants to get ahead at their expense. Running an executive search firm, I can tell you that no employer is perfect (as is no employee) and that if you have a problem, speak to your boss rather than announcing it to the wrong people.
Get caught doing something unintelligent via social media. This is an extreme case, but it should be mentioned. Just like people, companies want to maintain their integrity and come across to others in a positive manner that is conducive to them competing and thriving in the marketplace.
If, as an employee, you go against those beliefs, then you are probably going to be phased out. We all know the best way to get caught is to do something that is inappropriate and that should make its way to web.
Out of all the other reasons, this is the most easy to prevent and it begins by us changing the way we behave.
In the End
Getting fired is something to avoid and, if it does happen, we sure as heck don't want to be fired for something that could have been prevented such as the above reasons.
